🙋♂️Sudden night waking🙋♂️
Sudden night waking in an older child can be caused by several factors—some physical, some emotional.
🧠 Emotional or psychological factors
* Stress or anxiety: School pressure, friendships, changes at home, or upcoming events can cause nighttime wakeups.
* Nightmares: These become more vivid with age and awareness.
* Fears: School age can be when they develop fears (burglars, the dark, illness, etc.) through talking to other children at school
* Separation anxiety: Sometimes resurfaces unexpectedly—especially after holidays, illness, or transitions.
🛏️ Sleep environment or routine changes
* Bedtime too late: Overtired children are more likely to wake during the night.
* Sleep environment disruptions: Noise, light, temperature, or a change in bedroom setup can interrupt sleep.
* Change in schedule: Travel, summer holidays, or a change in routine can throw off sleep patterns.
🩺 Physical causes
* Growth spurts: Can disrupt sleep temporarily.
* Sleep disorders: Like sleep apnea or restless leg syndrome (speak to a doctor about these if you think it’s affecting your child)
* Illness or discomfort: Teething (molars), ear infections, allergies, or needing to use the toilet more often.
* Diet: Too much sugar or caffeine close to bedtime (even in things like chocolate or certain fizzy drinks).
📱 Technology
* Screens before bed: Blue light delays melatonin production and disrupts sleep cycles.
* Overstimulation in the evening: Intense video games, action-packed TV, or even sports/exercise too close to bed.
What do I suggest?
Have a calm, consistent bedtime routine which includes talking through their day and any worries they may have.
Limit screen time before bed and ensure their bedroom is a calm, clutter free place to relax and sleep ❤️
