Over the past year, I have worked with lots of children who have had a bit of a temperature during our time together. It’s bound to happen with mixing at baby groups, soft plays and nurseries.
I always get the message ‘they have a bit of a temperature. Expecting a bad night. Lots of wakes. It’s going to be awful!’
A fever can make kids uncomfortable, but it doesn’t always mean sleep will be disrupted. Some children sleep through a fever just fine, while others may wake more often and every child is different.
We will always respond to a child who needs support. Keep a thermometer nearby, keep the room comfortable, dress them lightly and offer reassurance. Sleep often helps their body recover, so don’t panic if they still manage a good night’s rest!
Out of my 4 boys, there’s been a real mix. My eldest always wakes when he has a fever and we all know about it 😅 My youngest sleeps through and when he wakes we go ‘ooh he’s a bit hot, grab the thermometer’ 😅
Remember that a fever is a signal to monitor, not a guarantee of sleepless nights.
