😴Sleepovers😴
We regularly stay at my in-laws house every couple of weeks, so my boys are used to sleeping in a different environment! But staying out can be a bit daunting for all! Here are my top tips for sleepovers at other people’s houses (either with or without you being there!)
1. Practice Visits:
Start with shorter visits to the house during awake times. Let your baby get familiar with the environment and the people without pressure.
2. Do Trial Naps:
Before a full overnight stay, try having your baby nap there a few times. It helps them get used to the sleep space, lighting, sounds, and smells.
3. Bring Familiar Items:
Pack your baby’s usual sleeping bag, comforter, white noise machine, and even the cot/bed sheet (it smells like home). Familiar smells and objects are comforting.
4. Keep the Routine the Same:
Write down or share your baby’s bedtime routine (bath, book, feeding, etc.) with the person looking after them. Explain exactly how they fall asleep as well as what to do if things don’t go to plan. Try to keep bedtime and naps close to your usual schedule.
5. Be Available (Emotionally and Logistically):
Let the the person know they can call or text you if they have questions. Sometimes just knowing you’re reachable helps everyone stay calm.
6. Start Small:
If you’re worried, you can plan for an early pickup the first time or keep it flexible — for instance, saying you might pick up at bedtime if things aren’t going well.
7. Stay Calm:
Babies pick up on your emotions. If you’re confident and relaxed about the sleepover, your baby is more likely to be too.
I hope these tips are helpful and reassure you that someone else will be able to look after your little one and you can also get some much needed ‘you’ time!
