✈️ Holiday tips – night flights✈️

You’re off on holiday and everyone is excited! But then you remember you’re going with a baby who naps, may have a set routine or possibly fights their sleep and suddenly the impending trip feels quite daunting!

We have travelled with the boys when they have been a range of ages from 6 months and have faced challenges such as early morning flights, night flights, sharing rooms, siblings sharing rooms, day naps out and about – the whole lot!

I thought I’d put together my top tips to help you all out! The next tip comes around night flights!

1. Try and get your child to sleep longer on the day of the flight. Either don’t wake them at their usual time or squeeze in a nap before heading to the airport. Chances are sleep will be disrupted whilst on the flight so may as well bank some more sleep during the day if you can!

2. Take a carrier for baby to nap in. The picture above is of my (then) 6 month old at 11pm in Palma Airport. Our flight was due to be at 7pm (prime bedtime 🥳) but then it got delayed more and more until midnight! We tried pushing him in the pram but it wasn’t working so I carried him around in the Ergobaby sling, he fell asleep and I was able to walk straight into the plane with him asleep.

3. If they wake up on the flight, try and get them back off to sleep with some gentle rocking/white noise.

4. If it’s a long haul overnight flight, keep an eye on wake windows and tired signs and support to sleep when due their next ‘nap’ (even if it is 1am!)

5. Ultimately, if they don’t sleep and they’re wide awake on the plane, it’s just one of those things! Take the pressure off yourself, accept that this isn’t a permanent occurrence and know they’ll probably fall asleep when you reach your destination 😅

But at the end of the day, holidays should be a time to relax! If routine goes out of the window, it really isn’t the end of the world. Enjoy yourself and get back on top of things when you return!
