✨ Why does my baby link sleep cycles at night but not during the day? ✨

I have so many clients whose babies are only taking short naps, but nights can stretch across multiple cycles. I always get asked, why? Why can they do it at night but not during the day? And so I wanted to create this post to show those of you going through the same thing that you are not alone and there is a reason!

During the day, your baby’s sleep pressure is lower, the environment is brighter and busier, and their internal body clock (circadian rhythm) isn’t signalling long, consolidated sleep. So when they naturally wake at the end of a sleep cycle (around 30–50 minutes), they’re more alert and easily stimulated making it harder to drift into the next cycle.

Overnight, everything shifts! Darkness boosts melatonin, sleep pressure is higher, and their circadian rhythm expects long, restorative sleep. This makes it easier for babies to connect one sleep cycle to the next, giving those longer stretches we all depend on.

Short naps can be completely normal developmentally and with the right sleep foundations, daytime linking can improve as your baby grows. For example a dark environment, white noise and teaching them to self settle can help them link sleep cycles more easily.
