🍼Feeding to sleep🍼
It’s absolutely fine for your baby to fall asleep while feeding—I used to love feeling like I had a ‘super power’ that could send my babies off to sleep instantly! Many breastfed babies naturally associate feeding with comfort and sleep, and this is developmentally normal.
However, here are a few things to consider depending on your goals:
It’s ok to continue if:
* You both enjoy it and it helps your baby settle.
* Your baby is getting good sleep overall.
* It’s not interfering with naps, night sleep, or your own rest.
You might want to change it if:
* Your baby is waking frequently at night and needs to feed back to sleep each time, and you’d like to reduce this.
* You’re planning to wean soon and want to create new sleep associations.
* You’re feeling touched out or like your baby can’t fall asleep without you.
Gentle alternatives:
* Gradually unlatch just before your baby falls fully asleep to encourage falling asleep independently.
* Introduce a comfort object (like a soft toy or blanket) if safe.
* Try a consistent bedtime routine that separates feeding from sleep.
But ultimately—if it works for you and your baby, there’s no need to rush change. Many children grow out of feeding to sleep naturally.
