😴Falling asleep feeding😴
After my post the other day about stopping feeding to sleep, I wanted to put a post up with the complete opposite end of the scale stating that it’s very common for babies to fall asleep while feeding, and there are several natural reasons for it:
1. ❤️Comfort and security: Feeding (especially breastfeeding) is soothing and comforting. The close contact, warmth, and rhythmic sucking can lull your baby to sleep.
2. 😴Sleep association: Babies can learn to associate feeding with falling asleep, especially if it’s part of their routine. Over time, the act of feeding becomes a sleep cue.
3. Tiredness: If your baby is already sleepy or overtired when feeding begins, they may drift off during the feed.
4. 🧬Release of hormones: Breast milk contains sleep-inducing hormones like oxytocin and melatonin, which can help babies relax and nod off.
5. 🥱Suckling reflex: The sucking motion itself is calming and repetitive, which can naturally lead to sleep.
For younger babies, especially newborns, there is not much you can do to stop them falling asleep feeding! For the first 11 weeks of my boys life I think they spent more time asleep than awake!
If your baby is gaining weight well and getting enough milk overall, it’s usually not a concern. However, if you’re trying to encourage independent sleep habits or worry they’re not feeding fully before falling asleep, I can offer tips on how to gently adjust things ❤️
