🚗Avoiding car naps🚗
I have been there, driving home for nap time, turning around and looking to find my child fast asleep in the car 🤦🏽♀️ It’s tricky — car rides are perfect for sleep because of the motion, white noise, and being strapped in — but there are a few good strategies you can try to help keep your baby or toddler awake if needed:
1. ⏰Time Car Rides Carefully:
* Try to time car trips right after a nap instead of before the next nap or bedtime. A well-rested child is less likely to nod off.
* Avoid long drives during their natural sleepy windows (like mid-morning or late afternoon).
2. 🧸Engage and Stimulate Them:
* Bring along new or special toys that they only get in the car.
* Play upbeat, lively music — sing along together if you can.
* Talk to your child a lot during the ride if you’re able.
3. 🪭Adjust Temperature:
* Keep the car slightly cool — warm, cozy cars make it even easier to fall asleep.
4. ☀️Use Sunshades and Light:
* Keep the car bright if possible. Darkness signals sleep. You can use sunshades to block the sunlight without making it too dim.
5. 🫣If They Start to Doze:
* You might gently call their name, sing louder, or offer a toy quickly to distract them.
* You can also pull over safely, get them out for a minute, and let them move a bit.
* My winning piece of advice for babies is handing them an empty water bottle with the lid firmly screwed on. They love the noise it makes and keeps them awake!
Realistic expectation: Sometimes despite everything, babies and toddlers will fall asleep anyway — and that’s ok! If they nap briefly (say, under 10–15 minutes), they may still be tired enough later for their normal nap. If they nap longer, you might need to adjust the rest of the day a little.
Worst case scenario, drive and get yourself a drive-thru coffee. You deserve it!
