✨ Monster spray? Let’s talk about why it can do more harm than good ✨
It’s so natural to want to ease your child’s fears at bedtime. My own boys have been through the ‘monster’ phase and I, like so many, did a google and found sleep consultants suggesting that ‘monster spray’ would help. I tried it. It didn’t work.
Why?
Because ironically…it can actually reinforce the fear instead of removing it.
When we use ‘monster spray’, we’re unknowingly confirming to a child that monsters might be real — because why else would we need spray to keep them away?
In your child’s mind, the message becomes:
“Ok… Mum sprayed the room so the monsters won’t come out — which means they’re still here somewhere.”
Suddenly the fear grows.
Instead, try this:
✨ Calmly explain that monsters are not real
✨ Check under the bed, behind the curtains, inside the wardrobe together
✨ Reassure them that their room is a safe, cozy place
✨ Keep your tone relaxed — your confidence teaches their nervous system how to feel
Children rely on us to help shape their reality. When we confidently show them that there’s nothing to fear, bedtime becomes lighter, calmer, and more secure.
You’re not just helping them sleep — you’re building emotional resilience. 💛
