Can we work on our child’s sleep when they have a cold? It’s a question I get asked all the time and the answer is a bit vague 😅 it’s yes…sometimes.😅

This is one of the most common questions I’m asked, especially in cold season ❄️

The answer depends on a few key things:

👃 Severity of the cold
A mild sniffle or runny nose is very different from a heavy, chesty, miserable cold.

😔 How your child is during the day
Are they still playing, eatingand fairly themselves? Or are they clingy, upset, lethargic, and clearly uncomfortable?

🤒 Cold vs flu
A standard cold is not the same as flu.
If your child has a fever, aches, extreme tiredness or seems really unwell — that’s a no. Pause and comfort.

Here’s the honest reality:
👉 Children have colds all the time.
If we waited for the perfect sniffle-free moment, we’d never start anything.

So if it’s a mild cold, your child is coping well in the day, and there’s no fever — you can continue or start sleep training, while being responsive and sensible.

If they’re clearly unwell?
Pause. Support. Cuddles first. Sleep training can wait 💛

Sleep support should never ignore how your child is feeling, it should work with them.

If you’re unsure whether to continue or pause during illness, that’s something I help families navigate all the time 🤍
