I always get messages like ‘ok! They’re asleep! When can I leave the room?’ ‘Or when can I transfer without waking them?’ And ideally, this would all be done when your child has gone into a deep sleep. But when is this?

Understanding your baby’s sleep stages can make transfers, routines and nighttime decisions much easier.

Your baby is more likely in deep (non-REM) sleep when you notice:

• Slow, rhythmic breathing
• A very relaxed body (hands open, arms and legs heavy)
• A calm, still face
• Little to no movement
• No response to gentle environmental changes (a soft sound, slight mattress movement)

💡 Tip for transfers:
Deep sleep usually happens 10–20 minutes after falling asleep. This is often the safest window to move your baby without waking them.

🚫 Avoid poking, lifting arms, or testing reflexes — instead, observe breathing and body relaxation to gauge sleep depth.

Every baby is different, and learning your baby’s cues takes time. If sleep feels confusing or inconsistent, that’s completely normal and my support can make a big difference.

Sleep is a skill, and parents don’t have to figure it out alone. Message me and see how I can help you ❤️
