🙃Night Rolling🙃

I get asked a lot about babies rolling over in the night, waking and being unable to get back to sleep and what to do about it.

This is a very common problem! Rolling and waking in the night is a frequent sleep disruption for babies, especially during developmental leaps. Why does it happen and what can we do about it?

🤔Why is it happening?:
1. Developmental milestone: Rolling and other movement during sleep increases as gross motor skills improve.

2. Sleep associations: If your baby relies on feeding, rocking, or a parent to fall asleep, they may wake and need that again when they roll.

3. Discomfort: They could be too hot, cold, or uncomfortable in their sleep space.

⭐️What can you do about it?

1. Support Self-Soothing:
* Let your baby try to settle for a few minutes after a roll. If they’re not upset, they may re-position and fall back asleep on their own.
* Practice rolling and repositioning during the day—this builds confidence and ability to self-adjust at night.

2. Review nap and bedtime routine:
* Make sure your baby is getting enough daytime sleep
* Keep bedtime consistent and early enough
* A calm, predictable bedtime routine helps signal sleep.

Unfortunately, it is just a phase (and a rather annoying one at that!), but if your baby can self settle, they’ll soon find that rolling either gets them into a more comfortable position or learn to roll back to their original position!
