😬Nap refusal😬
Babies sometimes resist naps even when they’re tired. What do you do in that situation?
Firstly, why are they refusing to nap?
1. Make sure the nap isn’t too early or too late. An overtired baby often fights sleep just as much as an undertired one.
2. Wind-down routine – A short, calm routine before naps (like closing curtains, quiet cuddle, lullaby, or feeding) helps signal “sleep time.” Consistency makes it easier for baby to recognise what’s coming.
3. If baby is upset, offer a cuddle, rock, or feed, but if they are playful and alert, it may be better to pause and try again in 15–20 minutes. Sometimes a reset—like a short walk outside or a change of scenery—helps.
4. The room should be dark, quiet (or with white noise), and at a comfortable temperature. Too much stimulation before naps can make it harder to settle.
This is all great, but what if they refuse and it becomes a missed nap?
If they skip it, move bedtime a bit earlier to prevent overtiredness. Babies won’t always take every nap, and that’s okay.
Bottom line – babies can’t be forced to sleep, but you can give them the best opportunity. Consistency over time usually helps.
