✈️Travelling across time zones✈️
Travelling across time zones with a baby or child can take a little extra planning! I have supported many families on travel day and in the first few days in the new time zone!
Here’s how you can support your child’s sleep during travel:
⭐️Before travel:
* Shift gradually: If possible, start shifting your baby’s schedule 15–30 minutes toward the new time zone each day a few days before you leave.
⭐️During travel:
* Stick to comforting sleep routines: Bring familiar sleep cues (sleeping bag, white noise machine, comforter, bedtime book) to create a familiar sleep environment wherever you are.
* Offer naps when needed: During the travel day, naps might be shorter or at the wrong time — that’s fine! Prioritise any sleep your baby can get, even if it’s not perfect!
(I have a separate post on travelling with a baby with some extra tips for both early morning and night flights)
⭐️After arrival:
* Get on the local time as soon as you can: Try to offer naps and bedtime based on the local time, even if you have to stretch or shorten wake windows a little at first.
* Use light strategically: In the morning, get your baby outside in bright natural light — it helps reset their internal clock. In the evening, keep things dim and quiet.
* Be flexible but consistent: Some crankiness is normal at first. Stick to your normal bedtime routine to give them comforting predictability while they adjust.
It may take a few days to adjust, but soon you will be on track and enjoying that well earned holiday!
