I remember the day we moved the boys into their own room after spending 6 months next to us. The absolute rollercoaster of emotions that came with it. Sadness that I would never have a baby sleep next to me again, joy that I didn’t need to tiptoe round the bedroom anymore, pleased to get a bit of room back in the bedroom and anxiety as to whether everything would be ok.

I decided to write this post to help you with the transition from your room, to their own room.

  • 1. Choose the right time
    * The Lullaby Trust advises that babies should sleep in the same room as their parents for at least the first six months to reduce the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). However there is no rush to move them into their own room as soon as they turn 6 months.

  • 2. Make the room comfortable
    * Keep the sleep environment similar to your room: same white noise machine, sleep sack, room temperature, etc.
    * Use blackout curtains and keep the crib setup consistent.

  • 3. Establish a predictable bedtime routine
    * Do calming activities before bed (bath, story, lullaby), and do the same routine each night to signal sleep is coming.

  • 4. Sleep next to them temporarily
    * If needed, you can sleep in the baby’s room for a few nights to help ease the transition.

  • 5. Be consistent, but flexible
    * Consistency helps them adapt, but be responsive to their needs. Some babies adjust in a few nights; others take a couple of weeks.

In my personal and professional experience, it’s more often than not our anxiety which makes this transition a lot harder than it should be. At the end of the day, if the bedtime routine is there and the room set up is exactly the same, your baby will sleep in their own room! In many cases, including my own, the baby sleeps better in their own room because the mattress is more comfortable than a next 2 me thin mattress and there are less distractions (such as a loud, snoring husband 😂🫣)

Good luck! If you need any help transitioning your baby into their own room, feel free to contact me for support ❤️
